TRIALS

Pre 65 Trials at the 2008 Festival of 1000 Bikes, Mallory Park.

The Taverners section of the VMCC has been asked, by the organisers of the Festival of 1000 Bikes, to look after the trials demonstration events taking place alongside the track and grass track displays.

A Trial will run on each day of the weekend (Sat 12th & Sun 13th July 2008).

The Taverners have been running a winter trials series in and around Leicestershire for about 40 years. Our events are laid out to suit the ‘Big Old Bikes’ that have fallen out of competitive favour in most ‘classic’ trials events. With that in mind, our trials are usually restricted to Pre-57 solo motorcycles and are divided into 4 classes (see regs for details). Machines should be, generally, of the period. Concentric Carbs, Electronic Ignitions and non standard fork internals are acceptable modifications.

We anticipate a healthy interest in the trials. The area designated and the likely close proximity of spectators has necessitated that we restrict the number of entries to 50 riders per day. To make the trials as interesting as possible to spectators; it has been decided that entries will be granted on an oldest bike basis. Hopefully numbers should permit entries from machines manufactured between 1957 and 1965 & these will be accepted up to the maximum entry.

Entries received, on or before the closing date, will be sorted by the age of machine and entries will be filled with the oldest 50 machines. We will notify successful entrants within one week. If you don’t receive a notification then, unfortunately, you have been unsuccessful.

Entries should be accompanied by the entry fee(s) which will be returned if the entry is unsuccessful.

If you are flexible and can ride on either of the two days please indicate, on the entry form, which day you would prefer to enter. We will endeavour to get you in on your preferred day.

Successful entries will be entitled to two free passes to the event.

Volunteers to act as observers are always welcome. Please contact the Clerk of the Course (Roger Monk, details below) if you, or friends, or family can assist. A free pass is the only reward we can offer other than our usual observers’ raffle! There may even be prizes for riders. We’ll let you know when we know.

ALL RIDERS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR HELMETS

We hope to see a good range of interesting machines (and riders) over the weekend and hope to provide a good demonstration of our sport in a safe and enjoyable environment for all.

GRASS TRACK

The Grasstrack will be held on Sunday 13th July 2008 on a brand new course (following extensive landscaping works at Mallory) situated at the end of the Avenue of Clubs.

VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE GRASSTRACK

“Oh how the gods smile on the assembled band of enthusiasts”. The Festival of 1000 Bikes brings joy to thousands of Vintage Grasstrackers… “Is that the fanatical vintage stalwart followers, the vintage bikes, or the vintage riders?” you may ask, (in jest of course.) The truthful answer is, a bit of all of these.

This year the Grasstrack Demonstration promises to be even better than the previous event. The tricky, bumpy, technical track of last season is replaced with a smoother, better shaped well placed oval that will encourage excellent racing with close dices and fearless passing. The format of the demonstration this year follows the usual structure of our race meetings.

We have classes for: Vintage solo, Post Vintage Solo, Pre and Post War solo, Classic solo, Classic 4 valve solo, a new class for post 1975 250 c.c. solo machines and two classes for vintage and Pre- 75 sidecar machines. The Section also caters for a growing number of junior riders who enjoy classes commensurate with their age, experience and the machines they ride. It has been good to see a growing number of youth riders on real vintage machinery. This situation has been encouraged though our policy of allowing the youngsters to gain experience of our club by riding any and every machines the already have. The new track promises much. With a smoother surface to ride we can expect a show of full throttle intelligent bravery second to none

You must look out for The Priestly Brothers on super fast vintage machinery. Also, watch for former Champion, Dave Abbot on B.S.A. and J.A.P. solo’s, and Andy Smith with son Chris on Velo. and J.A.P. machines plus 4 valve mounted Les Rowland. We also have the spectacle of vintage sidecars dicing for every inch of the track. Riders to watch out for include Mike Wild (Triumph), Stu Towner (Vincent), Bob Miles (Triumph), and mother and son duo, Celia and Arthur Walton (Ariel).

At this venue the true spirit of the vintage movement really shows through. The gentle atmosphere with great racing and the friendly, helpful fellow riders, never fail to amaze and satisfy. These are true enthusiasts who care about their sport.

PAST MASTERS PARADE

Motorcycling legend, Giacomo Agostini will take to the Mallory Park race track at the Vintage Motor Cycle Club’s Festival of 1000 Bikes on Sunday 13th July.

Multiple World Champion and 10 times TT winner, Agostini, returns to the Friendly Circuit where he was beaten by local motorcycle racer John Cooper back in 1971 at the Race of the Year.

John Cooper will also attend the event and he will be bringing along his BSA Rocket 3 which he beat Agostini on all those years ago.

A plethora of riders including Multiple World Champion Phil Read will join the duelling pair on track for the Stars Parade which forms the highlight of the Festival.

On the afternoon of Sunday 13th July many famous names and machines will take to the track in a thrilling mixture of sites and sounds.

Just an e-mail to say what a great weekend my wife & myself had at Mallory for the 1000 bike festival! We went out on track on Saturday & it went far too quickly!! But it was great & hopefully we will be able to attend next year. The track action was great but all the rest of the event was outstanding as well. We got to see & meet a couple of my racing hero's! as well. You all deserve a big pat on the back, as I'm sure it wasn't easy to arrange such an event. A Big Thanks from David & Wendy Smith. Thanks for a great event! Bloody brilliant. Next year I’ll have some better leathers and hopefully avoid being black flagged. sorry about that! However, Mallory can’t avoid criticism-bikings answer to Glastonbury. To see priceless classics covered in mud was terrible, not to mention the potential for trouble caused by riding on track on muddy tyres. “Newly improved Mallory”-I didn’t see it. In addition there isn’t a single seat in the place. Most tracks have the occasional scaffold seating. Loved the beer in the tent-a good effort to have real ale on, however the “music” was so loud and awful I couldn’t stay in it. Loved the chance to hear the superstars talk, but the interviewer didn’t seem to have planned his questions. After saying how much charisma Ago has he hardly gave him a chance to speak! Minor gripes however, cant wait for next year, Regards, Brian Forster. 43439  

I am the competitor N 692 during 1000 bikes of Mallory Park on July 12th and 13th. With my friends N 588 and 646 we passed an excellent weekend, all the organization was completed except maybe on Friday afternoon during our arrival in the rain or the members of the VMCC seemed a little exceeded by the meteorological conditions … The demonstration was formidable and machines on the track, in the exposure in the paddock and in the space club, of high quality. The series took place correctly and we appreciate the presence of the marshal controlling the most passionate and protecting the least fast (what misses in the French demonstrations) one thank you to them. I think that we were that 3 French people for these 1000 bikes, my friends coming from Paris and I of the region of the castles of the Loire and crossed 780 km to come to your demonstration. So much people were very nice on the “road bike" paddock, he seemed to me glances a little bit dark in the pre-railing, with our German motorcycles and our small French flags on Mb machines and on our helmets. Or can we read the report (Web or magazine) of the demonstration ? On Monday, July 14th being holiday in France we visited National Motorcycle Museum de Birmingham or we were amazed of the restoration and the quality, once again, presented motorcycles. I had meant to contact you before - but obviously my memory is failing due to advancing years. It was only to say that, from an entrant's perspective, I thought that the event was significantly better than the last two years. The only negative feedback I got was that some of the pre-war riders on Sunday afternoon were a little unhappy at sharing the track with a small number of modern sports bikes. In fairness the "moderns" did ride with some care, and didn't carve me up anyway. All in all it seemed to be a great success, a triumph in fact; or should that be a Scott or a Velo! Thank you for a great weekend at Mallory. We all had a really good time and there was a lot of interest in our stand. Hopefully there will be a bit of restoration work from it. We will see. The event was perfectly organised and seemed to run like clockwork. It was a shame that my Honda was misfiring, the new carbs needed the jets changing. It has all been sorted out now but it was blowing flames a foot out of the pipes. Wow. I would like next year to organise a track day for our clients here at HMR. When you have a bit of time, maybe you could advise me on how to go about it and I think that Mallory is the perfect place considering the history involved, not only with the bikes that we restore and build but also with my father and Mallory’s race history. Just a quick note to thank you all for all your hard work in making this years Festival of 1000 Bikes weekend such a Splendid Affair! I have no complaints to make what-so-ever, Only Praise & Compliments for it being such an exceptional event. I can't wait to do it all over again Next year & the year after!! The memory of using the Thunderbird rigid racer in anger for the first time around (any track, let alone proper open circuit) Mallory will live with me forever (Fear has a way of staying etched into the mind!) & also with my dad, Gordon, who hasn't seen the bike circulate a track in that manner for 30 years! He originally built the bike in 1974 & retired it in 1978 - replacing it with a later swinging arm version in an attempt to improve the somewhat wayward handling! Many thanks again for organizing such a wonderful weekend, the success that the Festival has achieved is most well deserved & only bore out of the hard work & enthusiasm that you all put into making this event so unique. Thank you very much for the invitation and hospitality and for staging this very fun event – great atmosphere in the paddock, it reminded me of the joys of bike racing again. I had a very enjoyable weekend and Mick very much liked the bike. I had fun riding the bike in the morning session, Mallory is a track that suits it ok, provided you can keep the front end down J. Mick and I even swapped bikes for the afternoon! Unfortunately tranny niggles meant Mick could only do one full session, but we are both keen to come again next year. I'm sorry that this isn't very timely but I would like to thank all the team sincerely for a brilliant weekend Festival event at Mallory. We got put around the back of the circuit for hardstanding / camping but apart from the dirt track back to the paddock it was fine, with a brilliant view of the circuit. You must have all put in a huge amount of effort in preparation for the event so please accept our grateful thanks to all concerned at Allen House and elsewhere. I hope it was commercially successful for the club and we look forward very much to future festivals. (I know there must be a thousand good reasons to have it at Mallory but is it not an option to consider Cadwell or any other venue?) Can I take this opportunity to thank and congratulate everyone at the VMCC for what can only be described as the most spectacular event that I have attended? How you achieved it to run so smoothly is beyond me. It is the first time we attended this event and hope it won’t be the last! Its 40 years since I last rode at Mallory, although we’ve been once or twice since. I’m 63 now and took my little 50cc Minarelli with me. Full chat round some of the bends on it, exhilarating to say the least and the best ride I’ve had in a long time. Will I be back, you bet. Lots & lots & lots of people made comment on my bike in the paddock & said it should have been on display up in the main marquee for everyone to see, maybe next year. AVENUE OF CLUBS

With over 40 one make Clubs in displaying in the Avenue of Clubs in 2007 this was be a big hit with visitors to the event. Again in 2008 each Club will be displaying their Members machines as well as many of those same Members riding in the Track parades.

AUTO JUMBLE/TRADE STANDS

Auto jumble
There will be a large Auto jumble held on both days of the 2008 event.

Following extensive landscaping work at Mallory Park over the last 2 years the Auto jumble will have a new dedicated area located on the outside of the circuit.

Each auto jumble stand measures 4M X 5M which can be booked by contacting VMCC HQ or e-mail hq@vmcc.net

Trade Stands
The Trade Village will be located within the race paddock and will also feature stands from all the events partners including Footman James Insurance Brokers Ltd, Bonhams Auctioneers, Mortons Media, The National Motorcycle Museum & The Ace Café.

CAMPING AND ACCOMMODATION

Great Camping facilities will be available at £10.00 per pitch for the entire week-end, Fr-Sun inclusive. There is no need to pre book as your camping fees will be collected on the day of arrival.

Ample catering to suit all tastes will be provided over the course of the weekend with the VMCC “Big Top” Marquee with Separate bar area also providing refreshment.

On the evening of both Friday 11th & Saturday 12th there will be live bands providing entertainment on The Ace Cafe Stage within in the VMCC “Big Top” marquee until late in the evening. Also in this area on Saturday evening their will be a “Stars on Stage” feature with interviews with some of the past masters who will be riding on Sunday 13th.

Stalwarts of the Ace Cafe stage in London the VMCC is delighted to welcome this most famous of Rock N Roll bands to the Festival of 1000 Bikes. One of the most talented & original artists on the UK rock n roll scene Darrel has 15 solo albums and west end stages appearances to his multiple credits. Also an accomplished session musician the band quote influences from country through to rockabilly and 60s blues and pop.

Classic pre 65 Trial organised by the Taverners Section of the VMCC on Mallory Park’s off road courses.

Come and see the display of VMCC Members machines in both the road & race bike paddocks.

STATIC DISPLAY OF PAST MASTERS RACE AND SPRINT MACHINES
From Sunday Morning come and see some of the incredible machines (& mingle with their star riders) such as Agostini’s MV500, Phil Read’s Paton 500 and the incredible Tul-aris plus the works machines supplied by The National Motorcycle Museum all displayed in the Past Masters section of the static display area within the race paddock. In a separate display area you can also see some historic Sprint bikes in the VMCC Sprint Sections own marquee.

GRASS TRACK
Historic Grass Track organised by the Grass Track and Speedway Section of the VMCC. Come and see some spectacular “grass action” on a brand new course situated at the end of the Ave of Clubs.

Sunday 12.30pm – 1.30pm & 5.00pm - 5.45pm
SPRINT DEMO
A fantastic display of straight line action will be provided by the Sprint Section of the VMCC during Sunday lunchtime & late afternoon on the Start/Finish straight. There will also be a Static Display of sprint machinery in the dedicated VMCC Sprint Section static display marquee located within the race bike paddock on both Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday 1.30pm – 2.30pm
THE PAST MASTER'S TRACK PARADE
See the incredible line up of Past Masters and machines take to the track in a spine tingling display of sites and sounds. Including a reprise to the epic 1971 race of the year battle between Ago & Cooper who will be joined by 70s superstar and multiple World Champion Phil Read on the awesome Paton 500 (See separate list for current line up).

Sunday 4.00pm
VMCC PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
After 4.00pm the following prestigious awards will be and presented directly to the winners and their machines with details being published in the VMCC Club Magazine and via Mortons Motorcycle Media Titles.

Event Services
Fuel - Will be available during the times set out on the event map - Mallory Park Map for location

Starter Service - Will be available on Sunday in the race paddock for the “reluctant machines” courtesy of Hawksley Engineering Ltd.

Track Session event photographer  - Reilly Studios will be filming each entrant in every session. Your souvenir photograph will be available to purchase at the event from their office located in the race paddock (Mallory Park Map for location). Photographs will also be available following the event by contacting Reilly Studios on (01455) 610782
